§ 1 Disclaimer regarding content
The free and freely accessible content of this website has been created with the greatest possible care. However, the provider of this website accepts no liability for the accuracy and timeliness of the free and freely accessible journalistic guides and news provided. Contributions identified by name reflect the opinion of the respective author and not always the opinion of the provider. Merely accessing the free and freely accessible content does not establish any contractual relationship whatsoever between the user and the provider; in this respect, the provider lacks the intention to be legally bound.
§ 2 External links
This website contains links to third-party websites (“external links”). These websites are subject to the liability of their respective operators. When the external links were first created, the provider checked the third-party content for any legal violations. At that time, no legal violations were apparent. The provider has no influence whatsoever on the current and future design and content of the linked pages. The placement of external links does not mean that the provider adopts the content behind the reference or link as its own. Constant monitoring of the external links cannot reasonably be expected of the provider without concrete indications of legal violations. However, if legal violations become known, such external links will be deleted immediately.
§ 3 Copyright and related rights
The content published on this website is subject to German copyright and related rights law. Any use not permitted by German copyright and related rights law requires the prior written consent of the provider or the respective rights holder. This applies in particular to the reproduction, editing, translation, storage, processing or rendering of content in databases or other electronic media and systems. Third-party content and rights are marked as such. The unauthorised reproduction or distribution of individual content or complete pages is not permitted and is a criminal offence. Only the making of copies and downloads for personal, private and non-commercial use is permitted.
The display of this website in third-party frames is only permitted with written permission.
§ 4 Special terms of use
Where special conditions for individual uses of this website deviate from the aforementioned sections, this will be expressly indicated at the appropriate place. In that case, the special terms of use apply in the respective individual case.

Terminology used
“Personal data” means any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person (hereinafter “data subject”); an identifiable natural person is one who can be identified, directly or indirectly, in particular by reference to an identifier such as a name, an identification number, location data, an online identifier (e.g. a cookie) or to one or more factors specific to the physical, physiological, genetic, mental, economic, cultural or social identity of that natural person.
“Processing” means any operation or set of operations which is performed on personal data, whether or not by automated means. The term is broad and covers practically any handling of data.
“Pseudonymisation” means the processing of personal data in such a manner that the personal data can no longer be attributed to a specific data subject without the use of additional information, provided that such additional information is kept separately and is subject to technical and organisational measures to ensure that the personal data are not attributed to an identified or identifiable natural person;
“Profiling” means any form of automated processing of personal data consisting of the use of personal data to evaluate certain personal aspects relating to a natural person, in particular to analyse or predict aspects concerning that natural person’s performance at work, economic situation, health, personal preferences, interests, reliability, behaviour, location or movements;
“Controller” means the natural or legal person, public authority, agency or other body which, alone or jointly with others, determines the purposes and means of the processing of personal data.
“Processor” means a natural or legal person, public authority, agency or other body which processes personal data on behalf of the controller;
Relevant legal basis
In accordance with Art. 13 GDPR, we inform you of the legal bases of our data processing. Where the legal basis is not stated in this privacy policy, the following applies: the legal basis for obtaining consent is Art. 6(1)(a) and Art. 7 GDPR; the legal basis for processing for the performance of our services and the implementation of contractual measures, as well as for responding to enquiries, is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR; the legal basis for processing to comply with our legal obligations is Art. 6(1)(c) GDPR; and the legal basis for processing to safeguard our legitimate interests is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. Where the vital interests of the data subject or of another natural person require the processing of personal data, Art. 6(1)(d) GDPR serves as the legal basis.
Security measures
In accordance with Art. 32 GDPR, taking into account the state of the art, the costs of implementation and the nature, scope, context and purposes of processing, as well as the risk of varying likelihood and severity for the rights and freedoms of natural persons, we implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to ensure a level of security appropriate to the risk. These measures include, in particular, safeguarding the confidentiality, integrity and availability of data by controlling physical access to the data, as well as access to, input, disclosure, securing the availability and separation of the data. Furthermore, we have established procedures that ensure the exercise of data subjects’ rights, the deletion of data and the response to threats to the data. In addition, we take the protection of personal data into account as early as the development or selection of hardware, software and procedures, in accordance with the principle of data protection by design and by default (Art. 25 GDPR).
Cooperation with processors and third parties
If, in the course of our processing, we disclose data to other persons and companies (processors or third parties), transmit it to them or otherwise grant them access to the data, this is done only on the basis of a legal permission (e.g. if a transfer of the data to third parties, such as payment service providers, is necessary for the performance of a contract pursuant to Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR), if you have given your consent, if a legal obligation provides for this, or on the basis of our legitimate interests (e.g. when using agents, web hosts, etc.).
If we commission third parties to process data on the basis of a so-called “data processing agreement”, this is done on the basis of Art. 28 GDPR.
Transfers to third countries
If we process data in a third country (i.e. outside the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA)), or if this occurs in the context of using third-party services or disclosing or transferring data to third parties, this is done only if it is necessary to fulfil our (pre-)contractual obligations, on the basis of your consent, on the basis of a legal obligation or on the basis of our legitimate interests. Subject to statutory or contractual permissions, we process data in a third country, or have it processed there, only if the special requirements of Art. 44 et seq. GDPR are met. This means that processing takes place, for example, on the basis of special guarantees, such as the officially recognised determination of a level of data protection equivalent to that of the EU (e.g. for the USA through the “Privacy Shield”) or compliance with officially recognised specific contractual obligations (so-called “standard contractual clauses”).
Rights of data subjects
You have the right to obtain confirmation as to whether or not data concerning you are being processed, and to access to such data as well as to further information and a copy of the data in accordance with Art. 15 GDPR.
In accordance with Art. 16 GDPR, you have the right to request the completion of data concerning you or the rectification of inaccurate data concerning you.
In accordance with Art. 17 GDPR, you have the right to request that data concerning you be erased without undue delay or, alternatively, in accordance with Art. 18 GDPR, to request the restriction of the processing of the data.
You have the right to receive the data concerning you that you have provided to us in accordance with Art. 20 GDPR and to request its transmission to other controllers.
Furthermore, pursuant to Art. 77 GDPR, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the competent supervisory authority.
Right to withdraw consent
You have the right to withdraw any consent you have given, pursuant to Art. 7(3) GDPR, with effect for the future.
Right to object
You may object to the future processing of data concerning you at any time in accordance with Art. 21 GDPR. In particular, you may object to processing for the purposes of direct marketing.
Cookies and right to object to direct marketing
“Cookies” are small files that are stored on users’ computers. Various pieces of information can be stored within cookies. A cookie serves primarily to store information about a user (or the device on which the cookie is stored) during or after their visit to an online offering. Temporary cookies, also called “session cookies” or “transient cookies”, are cookies that are deleted after a user leaves an online offering and closes their browser. Such a cookie may store, for example, the contents of a shopping basket in an online shop or a login status. Cookies that remain stored even after the browser has been closed are referred to as “permanent” or “persistent”. For example, the login status can be saved if users return after several days. Likewise, such a cookie may store users’ interests, which are used for reach measurement or marketing purposes. “Third-party cookies” are cookies offered by providers other than the controller operating the online offering (otherwise, if they are only the controller’s own cookies, they are referred to as “first-party cookies”).
We may use temporary and permanent cookies and explain this in our privacy policy.
If users do not want cookies to be stored on their computer, they are asked to deactivate the corresponding option in their browser’s system settings. Stored cookies can be deleted in the browser’s system settings. Excluding cookies may lead to functional restrictions of this online offering.
A general objection to the use of cookies employed for online marketing purposes can be declared for a large number of services, especially in the case of tracking, via the US site http://www.aboutads.info/choices/ or the EU site http://www.youronlinechoices.com/. Furthermore, the storage of cookies can be prevented by disabling them in the browser settings. Please note that in this case not all functions of this online offering may be available.
Deletion of data
The data processed by us will be erased, or its processing restricted, in accordance with Art. 17 and 18 GDPR. Unless expressly stated within this privacy policy, the data stored by us will be erased as soon as it is no longer required for its intended purpose and no statutory retention obligations prevent its erasure. If the data is not erased because it is required for other, legally permissible purposes, its processing will be restricted. This means that the data will be blocked and not processed for other purposes. This applies, for example, to data that must be retained for reasons of commercial or tax law.
Under statutory requirements in Germany, data is retained in particular for 10 years pursuant to §§ 147(1) AO, 257(1) nos. 1 and 4, (4) HGB (books, records, management reports, accounting vouchers, commercial books, documents relevant for taxation, etc.) and for 6 years pursuant to § 257(1) nos. 2 and 3, (4) HGB (commercial letters).
Under statutory requirements in Austria, data is retained in particular for 7 years pursuant to § 132(1) BAO (accounting documents, vouchers/invoices, accounts, receipts, business papers, statements of income and expenditure, etc.), for 22 years in connection with real property, and for 10 years in the case of documents relating to electronically supplied services, telecommunications, radio and television services provided to non-business customers in EU member states for which the Mini One-Stop Shop (MOSS) is used.
Hosting
The hosting services we use serve to provide the following services: infrastructure and platform services, computing capacity, storage space and database services, security services and technical maintenance services, which we use for the purpose of operating this online offering.
In doing so, we or our hosting provider process inventory data, contact data, content data, contract data, usage data, meta and communication data of customers, prospective customers and visitors to this online offering on the basis of our legitimate interests in the efficient and secure provision of this online offering pursuant to Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR in conjunction with Art. 28 GDPR (conclusion of a data processing agreement).
Collection of access data and log files
On the basis of our legitimate interests within the meaning of Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, we or our hosting provider collect data on every access to the server on which this service is located (so-called server log files). The access data includes the name of the web page accessed, file, date and time of access, amount of data transferred, notification of successful access, browser type and version, the user’s operating system, referrer URL (the previously visited page), IP address and the requesting provider.
For security reasons (e.g. to investigate misuse or fraud), log file information is stored for a maximum of 7 days and then deleted. Data whose further retention is required for evidentiary purposes is exempt from deletion until the respective incident has been finally clarified.
Provision of our statutory and business services
We process the data of our members, supporters, prospective customers, customers or other persons in accordance with Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR insofar as we offer them contractual services or act within the framework of an existing business relationship, e.g. towards members, or are ourselves recipients of services and benefits. Otherwise, we process the data of data subjects pursuant to Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR on the basis of our legitimate interests, e.g. in the case of administrative tasks or public relations work.
The data processed in this context, as well as the nature, scope, purpose and necessity of its processing, are determined by the underlying contractual relationship. This generally includes inventory and master data of the persons concerned (e.g. name, address, etc.), as well as contact data (e.g. email address, telephone, etc.), contract data (e.g. services used, content and information communicated, names of contact persons) and, if we offer services or products subject to a charge, payment data (e.g. bank details, payment history, etc.).
We erase data that is no longer required to fulfil our statutory and business purposes. This is determined according to the respective tasks and contractual relationships. In the case of business processing, we retain the data for as long as it may be relevant for the conduct of business and with regard to any warranty or liability obligations. The necessity of retaining the data is reviewed every three years; otherwise, the statutory retention obligations apply.
Data protection information for the application process
We process applicant data only for the purpose of, and within the scope of, the application process in accordance with the statutory requirements. Applicant data is processed to fulfil our (pre-)contractual obligations within the framework of the application process within the meaning of Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR, and pursuant to Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR insofar as data processing becomes necessary for us, e.g. in the context of legal proceedings (in Germany, § 26 BDSG also applies).
The application process requires applicants to provide us with their applicant data. The necessary applicant data is marked as such if we offer an online form; otherwise it follows from the job descriptions, and generally includes personal details, postal and contact addresses and the documents belonging to the application, such as cover letter, CV and references. In addition, applicants may voluntarily provide us with further information.
By submitting their application to us, applicants consent to the processing of their data for the purposes of the application process in the manner and to the extent set out in this privacy policy.
Insofar as special categories of personal data within the meaning of Art. 9(1) GDPR are voluntarily provided in the course of the application process, their processing is additionally based on Art. 9(2)(b) GDPR (e.g. health data, such as status as a severely disabled person, or ethnic origin). Insofar as special categories of personal data within the meaning of Art. 9(1) GDPR are requested from applicants in the course of the application process, their processing is additionally based on Art. 9(2)(a) GDPR (e.g. health data, if this is required for the exercise of the profession).
Where available, applicants can submit their applications to us via an online form on our website. The data is transmitted to us in encrypted form in accordance with the state of the art.
Applicants can also submit their applications to us by email. Please note, however, that emails are generally not sent in encrypted form and applicants must ensure encryption themselves. We therefore cannot accept any responsibility for the transmission path of the application between the sender and its receipt on our server, and we therefore recommend using an online form or sending the application by post. Instead of applying via the online form or by email, applicants continue to have the option of sending us their application by post.
In the event of a successful application, the data provided by applicants may be further processed by us for the purposes of the employment relationship. Otherwise, if the application for a vacancy is unsuccessful, the applicants’ data will be deleted. Applicants’ data will also be deleted if an application is withdrawn, which applicants are entitled to do at any time.
Subject to a justified withdrawal by the applicants, deletion takes place after a period of six months, so that we can answer any follow-up questions regarding the application and meet our obligations to provide evidence under the German General Equal Treatment Act (AGG). Invoices for any reimbursement of travel expenses are archived in accordance with the requirements of tax law.
Talent pool
In the course of the application, we offer applicants the opportunity to be included in our “talent pool” for a period of two years on the basis of consent within the meaning of Art. 6(1)(b) and Art. 7 GDPR.
The application documents in the talent pool are processed solely in the context of future job advertisements and the search for employees and are destroyed at the latest when the period expires. Applicants are informed that their consent to inclusion in the talent pool is voluntary, has no influence on the current application process, and that they may withdraw this consent at any time with effect for the future and may object within the meaning of Art. 21 GDPR.
Contacting us
When users contact us (e.g. via contact form, email, telephone or social media), the information they provide is processed for the purpose of handling and responding to the contact request pursuant to Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR. Users’ information may be stored in a customer relationship management system (“CRM system”) or a comparable system for organising enquiries.
We delete enquiries once they are no longer required. We review the necessity every two years; statutory archiving obligations also apply.
Newsletter – mailing service provider
Newsletters are sent via the mailing service provider “MailChimp”, a newsletter mailing platform of the US provider Rocket Science Group, LLC, 675 Ponce De Leon Ave NE #5000, Atlanta, GA 30308, USA. You can view the mailing service provider’s privacy policy here: https://mailchimp.com/legal/privacy/. The Rocket Science Group LLC d/b/a MailChimp is certified under the Privacy Shield framework and thereby provides a guarantee of compliance with the European level of data protection (https://www.privacyshield.gov/participant?id=a2zt0000000TO6hAAG&status=Active). The mailing service provider is used on the basis of our legitimate interests pursuant to Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR and a data processing agreement pursuant to Art. 28(3) sentence 1 GDPR.
The mailing service provider may use the recipients’ data in pseudonymised form, i.e. without assignment to a user, to optimise or improve its own services, e.g. for the technical optimisation of the sending and presentation of the newsletters, or for statistical purposes. However, the mailing service provider does not use the data of our newsletter recipients to write to them itself or to pass the data on to third parties.
Newsletter – performance measurement
The newsletters contain a so-called “web beacon”, i.e. a pixel-sized file that is retrieved from our server when the newsletter is opened or, if we use a mailing service provider, from that provider’s server. In the course of this retrieval, technical information, such as information about the browser and your system, as well as your IP address and the time of retrieval, is initially collected.
This information is used for the technical improvement of the services based on the technical data, or to analyse the target groups and their reading behaviour based on their retrieval locations (which can be determined with the help of the IP address) or access times. The statistical surveys also include determining whether the newsletters are opened, when they are opened and which links are clicked. For technical reasons, this information can be assigned to individual newsletter recipients. However, it is neither our intention nor, if one is used, that of the mailing service provider to monitor individual users. Rather, the evaluations serve to help us recognise the reading habits of our users and to tailor our content to them or to send different content according to the interests of our users.
Google Analytics
On the basis of our legitimate interests (i.e. interest in the analysis, optimisation and economic operation of our online offering within the meaning of Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR), we use Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google LLC (“Google”). Google uses cookies. The information generated by the cookie about users’ use of the online offering is generally transmitted to a Google server in the USA and stored there.
Google is certified under the Privacy Shield framework and thereby provides a guarantee of compliance with European data protection law (https://www.privacyshield.gov/participant?id=a2zt000000001L5AAI&status=Active).
Google will use this information on our behalf to evaluate users’ use of our online offering, to compile reports on activities within this online offering and to provide us with further services related to the use of this online offering and of the internet. Pseudonymous usage profiles of users may be created from the processed data.
We use Google Analytics only with IP anonymisation activated. This means that users’ IP addresses are truncated by Google within member states of the European Union or in other contracting states of the Agreement on the European Economic Area. Only in exceptional cases will the full IP address be transmitted to a Google server in the USA and truncated there.
The IP address transmitted by the user’s browser will not be merged with other Google data. Users can prevent the storage of cookies by adjusting the corresponding settings in their browser software; users can also prevent the collection by Google of the data generated by the cookie and relating to their use of the online offering, as well as the processing of this data by Google, by downloading and installing the browser plug-in available at the following link: http://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout?hl=de.
Further information on Google’s use of data and on settings and objection options can be found in Google’s privacy policy (https://policies.google.com/technologies/ads) and in the settings for the display of advertisements by Google (https://adssettings.google.com/authenticated).
Users’ personal data will be deleted or anonymised after 14 months.
Online presences on social media
We maintain online presences within social networks and platforms in order to communicate with the customers, prospective customers and users active there and to inform them about our services. When accessing the respective networks and platforms, the terms and conditions and data processing policies of their respective operators apply.
Unless otherwise stated in our privacy policy, we process users’ data insofar as they communicate with us within the social networks and platforms, e.g. write posts on our online presences or send us messages.
Integration of third-party services and content
Within our online offering, on the basis of our legitimate interests (i.e. interest in the analysis, optimisation and economic operation of our online offering within the meaning of Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR), we use content or service offerings of third-party providers in order to integrate their content and services, such as videos or fonts (hereinafter uniformly referred to as “content”).
This always presupposes that the third-party providers of this content perceive the users’ IP address, since without the IP address they would not be able to send the content to the users’ browsers. The IP address is therefore required for the display of this content. We endeavour to use only content whose respective providers use the IP address solely for the delivery of the content. Third-party providers may also use so-called pixel tags (invisible graphics, also referred to as “web beacons”) for statistical or marketing purposes. The “pixel tags” can be used to evaluate information such as visitor traffic on the pages of this website. The pseudonymous information may also be stored in cookies on the users’ devices and may contain, among other things, technical information about the browser and operating system, referring websites, time of visit and other information about the use of our online offering, and may also be linked to such information from other sources.
Vimeo
We may embed videos from the platform “Vimeo” of the provider Vimeo Inc., Attention: Legal Department, 555 West 18th Street New York, New York 10011, USA. Privacy policy: https://vimeo.com/privacy. Please note that Vimeo may use Google Analytics; in this regard, we refer to Google’s privacy policy (https://www.google.com/policies/privacy) as well as the opt-out options for Google Analytics (http://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout?hl=de) or Google’s settings for the use of data for marketing purposes (https://adssettings.google.com/.).
YouTube
We embed videos from the platform “YouTube” of the provider Google LLC, 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA. Privacy policy: https://www.google.com/policies/privacy/, opt-out: https://adssettings.google.com/authenticated.
Google Fonts
We embed fonts (“Google Fonts”) of the provider Google LLC, 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA. Privacy policy: https://www.google.com/policies/privacy/, opt-out: https://adssettings.google.com/authenticated.
Typekit fonts by Adobe
On the basis of our legitimate interests (i.e. interest in the analysis, optimisation and economic operation of our online offering within the meaning of Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR), we use external “Typekit” fonts of the provider Adobe Systems Software Ireland Limited, 4-6 Riverwalk, Citywest Business Campus, Dublin 24, Republic of Ireland. Adobe is certified under the Privacy Shield framework and thereby provides a guarantee of compliance with European data protection law (https://www.privacyshield.gov/participant?id=a2zt0000000TNo9AAG&status=Active).
Use of Facebook social plugins
On the basis of our legitimate interests (i.e. interest in the analysis, optimisation and economic operation of our online offering within the meaning of Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR), we use social plugins (“plugins”) of the social network facebook.com, which is operated by Facebook Ireland Ltd., 4 Grand Canal Square, Grand Canal Harbour, Dublin 2, Ireland (“Facebook”). The plugins may display interaction elements or content (e.g. videos, graphics or text contributions) and can be recognised by one of the Facebook logos (a white “f” on a blue tile, the terms “Like” or “Gefällt mir”, or a “thumbs up” sign) or are marked with the addition “Facebook Social Plugin”. The list and appearance of the Facebook social plugins can be viewed here: https://developers.facebook.com/docs/plugins/.
Facebook is certified under the Privacy Shield framework and thereby provides a guarantee of compliance with European data protection law (https://www.privacyshield.gov/participant?id=a2zt0000000GnywAAC&status=Active).
When a user calls up a function of this online offering that contains such a plugin, their device establishes a direct connection with Facebook’s servers. The content of the plugin is transmitted by Facebook directly to the user’s device and integrated by it into the online offering. In the process, usage profiles of users may be created from the processed data. We therefore have no influence on the scope of the data that Facebook collects with the help of this plugin and therefore inform users in accordance with our state of knowledge.
By integrating the plugins, Facebook receives the information that a user has accessed the corresponding page of the online offering. If the user is logged in to Facebook, Facebook can assign the visit to their Facebook account. If users interact with the plugins, for example by clicking the Like button or posting a comment, the corresponding information is transmitted from your device directly to Facebook and stored there. If a user is not a member of Facebook, it is still possible for Facebook to obtain and store their IP address. According to Facebook, only an anonymised IP address is stored in Germany.
The purpose and scope of the data collection and the further processing and use of the data by Facebook, as well as users’ related rights and setting options for protecting their privacy, can be found in Facebook’s privacy notice: https://www.facebook.com/about/privacy/.
If a user is a Facebook member and does not want Facebook to collect data about them via this online offering and link it with their member data stored by Facebook, they must log out of Facebook and delete their cookies before using our online offering. Further settings and objections regarding the use of data for advertising purposes are possible within the Facebook profile settings: https://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=ads or via the US site http://www.aboutads.info/choices/ or the EU site http://www.youronlinechoices.com/. The settings are platform-independent, i.e. they are applied to all devices, such as desktop computers or mobile devices.
Functions and content of the Twitter service, provided by Twitter Inc., 1355 Market Street, Suite 900, San Francisco, CA 94103, USA, may be integrated within our online offering. This may include, for example, content such as images, videos or texts and buttons with which users can express their appreciation of the content or subscribe to the authors of the content or to our posts. If users are members of the Twitter platform, Twitter can assign the access to the above-mentioned content and functions to the users’ profiles there.
